World War 2 Through the 1970s - Research Paper ExampleThe paper go forth also discuss the well-mannered rights break finisheds after Second World War for the African-Americans and political awareness of the young Americans during the Vietnam War. On the last part, the paper will attain President Johnsons great society programs that are currently relevant to America. Introduction There are portentous historical turning points for Americas current society, culture, politics and economy from the World War II through to the 1970s. One of the significant turning point was the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-1956) that precipitated the civil rights move manpowerts (Kennedy & Bailey, 2010). The event lead to calls for massive bus boycotts and national protests due to racial desegregation of African-Americans in public transport (Kennedy & Bailey, 2010). The event ultimately led to a series of public protests that ultimately led to enactment of Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibited all forms of discrimination. This event led to unification of American society through eradication of racial segregation in many public places such as schools and public transport thus creating the ideal American society. Another significant turning point was the Watergate Scandal. The term Watergate refers complex political scandals that occurred between 1972 and 1974. Five burglars broke in to Watergate Hotel that housed Democratic National Committee Headquarters. The five were later arrested and sustain that they had been authorised by Nixon to break in the hotel. The scandal changed the political campaign financing and created the aggressive attitude of Americans towards elections (Kennedy & Bailey, 2010). The scandal revealed that Nixon had a wire tapping system and led to impeachment of Nixon and conviction of several top administrators in his government (Kennedy & Bailey, 2010). This can be seen a major turning point in the enforcement of the constitution and political laws in A merica. America in the late 1930s wanted to stay away from European conflicts that ultimately led to the Second World War. America was one of the Isolationists that advocated for neutrality and non-involvement in both European and Asian conflicts (Kennedy & Bailey, 2010). The first reason why America did not want to join European conflicts was the memories of the tragic losings experienced during the First World War. Secondly, America was experiencing negative frugal effects of the Great Depression and was committed to expanding its economic interests in Latin America. Immediately after First World War, the US congress rejected American membership to the League of Nations since that move would lead to participation in European conflicts. The troubling economic problems bolstered the idea that America should concentrate on the domestic economic problems and isolate from European conflicts (Kennedy & Bailey, 2010). Before the Second World War, women in America attended further to f amily duties and were paid much lesser for completing the same jobs compared with their male counterparts. The first role of women in helping the Second World War was replacing the men in the labor market since majority of men joined the forces. Women were allowed to work in the manufacturing industry, munitions factories and in day care centers. During the Second World War, women served in the soldiery in an official capacity. Women participated in the war through different military branches such as Women Army Auxiliary Corps (WAACs), Women Accepted for Volunteer work (WAVES) and Women Air-force Service Pilots (WASP) (Kennedy & Bailey, 2010). Women also served in the Coast Guard units and Marine units. About 350,000 American women participated

Scientific laws be viewed as the reason as to why the globe is evolving in to a new planet of inventions. However, questions argon asked as to whether these laws are real or just what are forced to believe. According to Cullen as much as there are errors involved in coming up with scientific theories, people tend to wholly believe scientific inventions (67). The essay will provide insight as to why scientific laws do not describe true facts about reality.Scientific laws include the application of many formulae. As is it proven no human being can be 100 percent efficient and accurate. As scientist come up come with these formulae there is an obvious assumption that s ome errors and estimates are included in the invention of scientific laws. The estimates and errors are evidence that the assumptions displayed by scientific laws mat not provide the accurate facts about reality. According to Godfrey-Smith if a theory or law is based on assumptions there is always a probability that the law cannot be completely accurate (102). If the laws were based on facts rather than scientific assumptions, it would be logic to argue on the fact that scientists are accurate in their findings (Hempel, 211).In an argument by Rosenberg he argues that scientific explanation is casual explanation (94). There is not much evidence of starchy or completely proven explanations. Science only tries to explain already existing phenomena with laws invented from results. It is for this reason that it becomes evident that any formula can be utilize to come up with known result. This case can be compared to a person given an answer to arithmetic then asked to come up with a fo rmula. This becomes easy as any

Pennington (2008) explains thatAccording to Thorndikes (1911) righteousness of effect, if the effect is rewarding for the organism, then the behaviour will tend to be reproduced again in the future. If the effect is punishing, the behaviour is not likely to be reproduced in the future. Therefore, I would need to ensure my sessions were interesting for people to learn so they would want to return back to my sessions over the next few days and for any future sessions I will have planned. If they have enjoyed the first sessions chances are they will enjoy the next ones. First of all I would explain the Health and Safety aspects of the room, what to do should the fire alarms sound and show them where the nearest fire exits were. Then to start the session I would do an ice breaker session as this would help people to relax and reli eve any anxieties they may have, it will hopefully break down barriers, give people belonging to the group and help people remember names. It will promote team work and encourage people to share their interests and common grounds and it will give me some idea of how each person reacts and interacts in a group ready for the sessions I will be teaching. There are many books devoted just for ice breakers sessions but it all depends on what your needs are and who you will be working with but their main aim is to give ideas of how to get your students to work as a group and feel they are fully present if you are not fully present in a group then you cannot learn. Rogers, J. 2001) I would need to stick to the schedule and not digress as this could delay the day and sessions may get rushed near to the end and important information may not be taken in therefore the learning needs may not be met which could have a knock on effect putting theory to practice in the workplace. Whilst presenting I would have had to gain the knowledge to present it with confidence. According to Blooms Revised taxonomy Anderson, L. Et al. (2000), I would have to be creative, evaluate, analyse, apply, understand and remember my information teaching for it to work. Therefore, to be creative, I will need to bring in new ideas and a different way of viewing things should help with my planning. I will be able to evaluate and analyse through observation by doing an evaluation form for the students to accomplish when their training is finished. I will apply theory to practise with the knowledge I have gained and where I found the sources so the students can gain further knowledge themselves by reading and looking at the relevant websites.I will finally put my information on paper and powerpoint to ensure I have prompts to remind me and the handouts would reflect the knowledge with an area for the students to take notes to help them remember the information I have taught. The final part of the day wo uld be the quiz I had prepared to see if they had taken in any of the knowledge I had taught over the previous days. My week would not end when the students left the room for the final day of training I would then have to assess whether they have met the criteria of a pass or whether they would need to be referred back for further training. This is defined by scoring over 40/50 on the knowledge quiz, which was previously discussed at an executive meeting with the regional training officers at head office. I would also need to add the people who attended training onto the database of attendance to ensure they receive their certificates of attendance, it is also evidence they have attended mandatory training and it would allow them onto the unit to continue with safe practice after gaining knowledge through mandatory training and following the companies Policies and Procedures.

Addiction and Behavior Essay Example for Free

Addiction and Behavior EssayThesis Statement In this paper, I will try and analyze overchargeion and the divers(a) behaviors that addiction will induce in an soulfulness, and I will overly describe the courses of addiction that an average separate is prone to, and research the efforts that are creation made for an addict to try to discipline his offensive behavior brought on by his addiction.Experts feel and do stress on the fact that addictions and compulsions of any kind stem and originate from an overwhelming feeling of not macrocosm in control of ones life, and a need to gain some stress of control over events that seem to be overtaking him or her. Certain addictions, however, possess genetic components, and are generally passed on within the family, where one atom may have been addicted or been prone to compulsive behaviors. He may have inadvertently passed on this behavior to the next generation, and in these cases, this barbarian cycle would continue.Addictions can be of several kinds. One such(prenominal) compulsion is that of an addiction to drugs or other substances, and another is an obsession for sex. Eating disorders can also qualify as addictions of compulsions, and overspending, gambling and overworking too are obsessive and compulsive disorders.According to experts, The power of fantasy is the enduring power of addiction, wherein an addict may be prone to developing fantasies of having gained a aesthesis of control over his life, beca engage of his addiction. The addict would and so be quite unwilling to give up these drug induced fantasies and enter a normal life again, and this can be one of the major problems that an addict may face at the quantify when he is addicted no matter what his addiction may be.The addicted individual would much often than not choose to induce mood changes in himself, instead of trying to address the actual causes of the stresses that he is faced with. Take for example an alcoholic he would like to drink and blame the failure of his wedding ceremony on his spouse, rather than face the underlying issues behind the failure of his marriage. In this lies the causes and the reasons for his continued addiction to alcohol. Take the example of a money addict. This individual would prefer to binge on a spending spree, rather than face the underlying money issues, and making use of the money to settle his debts. In short, an addict behaves in such a way that he believes with strong conviction that no matter what stresses life may have to throw at him, he would be able to face them all, as long as he has his own addiction to get him through lifes tough situations. (Earll, Steven, 2004)As a result of extensive scientific research done through the years, forthwith one can be reasonably sure that addiction as such can be qualified as a disease that affects ones brain as well as ones behaviors. It is evoke to note that in the past, scientists attributed addictive behaviors related to dr ug and alcohol abuse to the fact that the user lacked in willpower, and that he could, if he wished to, bring an end to his addictions. This was the vox populi that shaped most of societys responses to addicts an addict was viewed as a morally flawed individual, who displayed serious moral failing by being unavailing to control his own behaviors. It is only today that the average individual is able to comprehend the basic fact that addiction may be the result of a combination of different factors, and that it can must be treated as a disease than could cause great harm to ones health.Scientists today use this vital knowledge to create and develop effective methods of treatment, which would be able to reduce the toll that addiction has on the individuals family and friends. Today, arrest drug abuse has gained precedence over other forms of treatment, and this has been proven to help addicts get over their addictions with a reasonable amount of success.Drug addiction or abuse as suc h can be described as a chronic and relapsing disease that affects the brain of the user, despite the user being aware of the fact that such abuse can result in grave consequences for him in the long run. One must remember that the longer an individual is addicted to drugs, the more harmful the impact of the drugs on his brain, and the more harmful his behavior may become. To understand the true nature of addiction, one must offset try to understand why people take drugs, and exactly why they become addicted to drugs and other substances. One of the more important and one of the world-class reasons according to researchers is that an individual starts taking drugs so that he may feel good. Most drugs induce a sense of great pleasure in the individual who has taken them, and more importantly, the user feels a sense of power, self confidence and self assurance that he would never feel in normal life.Perhaps, the sense of power, feelings of relaxation and of intense satisfaction that the drugs have given him induces him to take more, and then some more, until the time when he can no longer control his intake, and at which time he is considered to be addicted. Individuals, who may suffer from feelings of acute anxiety, or from stress related disorders, or from clinical depression, are also prone to use drugs to help them overcome these feelings. Some others may feel that drugs may help them perform better, like for example an athlete, who may take performance enhancing drugs that would help him win.Adolescents may be particularly vulnerable to drug addiction, perhaps because of peer pressure, or simply because others are doing it, why not me? the sad fact is that although drugs may base on balls the user a sense of satisfaction and power at the outset, it is true that as time goes by, the user will feel that he has to take more quantities of the same drug, if he wished to achieve the same feelings of euphoria and pleasure. It is at this time that the user realiz es that he would not be able to function without a cook, at which time he may be considered an addict.Drug addicts reach a point of time when they pursue the drug as if it were a lifeline, regardless of the behavioral problems that theDrug usage may cause in them, and the trouble that they may be causing others around them, because of the drug usage and addiction. It is at this point of time that drug usage becomes known as drug abuse and addiction, and it is at this point that the addicts self control becomes severely strained and impaired.Scientists have conducted brain imaging and mapping studies of drug addicts, and the findings show that for addicted individuals, physical changes become evident in the areas of the brain that would normally control judgment, decision making, memory, and even behavior control. These are the changes in the brain that affect the addicts behaviors, and they may well be able to shed washy on the compulsive and the addictive behaviors displayed by an addict.A tragic factor is that an adolescents brain continues to develop and grow into adulthood, and when the adolescent uses drugs and becomes addicted to them, then he undergoes dramatic changes in his pre-frontal cortex, that area of the brain that would enable him to assess a particular give situation, make decisions based on his judgment of that situation, and mention his desires and yearnings under control, as any normal adolescent would do.This means that the adolescent would be forced to lose control over a given situation, and set up to the influence of drug addiction on his behavior. Therefore, say experts, introducing drugs or other substances at this stage of development would automatically have a long persistent negative impact on the young person who has become addicted. Durkheims Theory of Suicide

Durkheims Theory of SuicideSuicide is a very obscure subject triggered by various interlinking factors. The failure to meet wholenesss expectations which may pick step to the fore been instilled as early as childhood may bring or so a wide variety of emotions leading to people committing self-destruction for various reasons. Depression, physical or sexual abuse, horrible disappointments, severe financial loss, mental or emotional disorders, all trigger feelings of emptiness and hopelessness and atomic number 18 just some of the few psychological factors which may influence an individuals final and distorted stopping point of committing self-destruction as a means to put an end to these insufferable emotions. The foregoing, however, is just a superficial analysis touching merely upon the surface of the deep-seated source of self-destruction. This paper will thus attempt to provide a more in depth analysis of why people commit self-destruction by looking primarily at the soc iological factors and in spellicular in carnal knowledge to Durkheims transaction.Durkheim defines self-annihilation as a general state of utmost(a) depression and exaggerated sadness, causing the patient no longer to realize sanely the bonds which connect him with the people and things about him -pleasures no longer attract Durkheim,195163. Durkheim that stated that man cannot become attached to superiorer aims and submit to a rule if he sees nothing above him to which he belongs to free him from all societal pressure is to abandon him to himself and demoralize him Durkheim,1951110.In Durkheims Interdiction to Suicide A study in Sociology, Durkheim expresses his concern in developing the conduct of sociology. He sees the main problem to be that sociology is mostly constructed on philosophical overviews, and does not answer the exact favorable questions. he suggests a methodology that will give the intelligence of sociology strong baselines and real bequeaths. In his bo ok, Durkheim applies these propositions and shows how sociology should be conducted, and firmly draws conclusions that expose to us the way in which we should be able to approach the gruelingies of society. This study has been presented in such(prenominal) a way that it is probable to assess the relevance and accuracy of its meanings and deductions. Durkheim gives the importance of sociology far more than existence just a tool to fix the world, b bely it is a lens, through which we see reality as a sh atomic number 18d reality, one included of individuals who be determined by their realities. In this introductory chapter he investigates the act of suicide and explores its well-disposed roots by examining suicide grade in polar social classes and correlating that with the characteristics of the society . Durkheim,197041A differentiation is made among two lineaments of suicide, collateral and negative. In Durkheims words suicide is thus described as all cases of death resul ting directly or indirectly from a positive or negative act of the victim himself, which he knows will produce this result Durkheim,198664. A positive performance would be to discharge or to debar an act. In this case, death comes as a straight product of the action. A negative act would be the scenario of remaining in a burning abide or to refuse eating to the point of hunger. Death in this case is the indirect result of an individuals act.Durkheim believed that the areas with the high schoolest rates of mental illnesses and alcoholism are not ineluctably the areas with the highest suicide rates , esquirol wrote that suicide may be seen to be for us only a phenomenon resulting from many different causes and appearing under many different forms and it is clear that this phenomenon is not characteristic of a disease.Esquirol,1838528Durkheim believed that suicide is not an individual act nor a mortalal achievement. It is produced by some power which is over and above the individ ual.Durkheim studied suicide vis a vis the relationship between individuals and society affirmed that suicide is a social phenomenon as well as establishing that there are no societies in which suicide does not occur. He asserted that what most people regard as an individual act is in reality the result of the social world. The evidence supporting this view are numerous. In addition to the start differentiation made between positive and negative acts of suicide , Durkheims seek concluded that the institution of marriage protects against suicide making the observation that suicide rates are higher among people that have lost their spouse and those whom are divorced.. In additional Durkheim observes that suicide rates are higher among couples who have no children than couples who do, concluding that a human being needs to be love and have a affair in action. People who does not experience this in their life are the ones more susceptible to suicide. Durkheim,1951175. The institution of marriage may thus play a vital role in ones decision to commit suicide Whether marriage should be viewed positively in relation to suicide is however debatable. While on the one hand marriage may play a role in protecting against suicide by providing love, purpose and stability in ones life it may on the other hand be a volatile institution that once shattered may alternatively be an instigator of suicideDurkheim interestingly further observed that suicide rates are higher during times of peace than times of war because during war people need to be untied in defending their country Durkheim,1951229 This observation may consequently suggest that feelings of patriotism, honor as well as purpose tend to distant an individual from suicide. Suicide rates also tend to be higher during rapid economic changes than in economic crises as rapid economic changes are sudden and difficult to endure. Durkheim,1951241This observation made by Durkheim may suggest that people are required to wo rk harder in such economic times constantly being pushed to their limits in order to keep up to such rapid changes bringing about feelings of despair, restlessness and being under appreciated.According to Durkheims research, religion may have an affect on suicide rates. Durkheims collected data suggested that Protestants are more apparent to commit suicide than Catholics, due to the fact that Protestants are more idiosyncratic while Catholics are more communitarian. Durkheim,1951153 In other words Catholics tend to have more social support. According to Durkheim people connecting and validating each other within a community plays an important role in preventing suicide making this kind of social integration important. Without this type of connection people may experience feelings of depression , isolation pushing them towards suicide. Durkheim, however, seemed to identify two sides a coin in relation to social integration pointing out that where social integration is high, people a re more likely to commit suicide in order to avoid go burdens to society . Two distinct features are therefore identified by Durkheim namely, social regulation and social integration. Integration is described as the degree to which corporate sentiments are shared and regulation refers to the degree of external constraint on people Ritzer,199290 . Based on these two social forces, four types of suicide have been proposed by Durkheim.Durkheim differentiated between four types of suicide, the first being egoistic suicide. Durkheim,1951152 Egoistic suicide is viewed as stemming from an absence of social integration and is committed by people who are outcast by society and are insufficiently integrated into social mathematical groups and societies, they depend more on themselves than on a group of objectives and instructions. They are not socially combined or not socially tied to a community or group. These types of individuals find themselves powerless in decision their own individu al place in society and experience problems adjusting to other groups and are given little or no social care. Suicide is therefore perceived as a solution to free themselves of the loneliness or profligate individuation , this brings Durkheim points out that this type of suicide is mostly prevalent amongst those who are unmarried, widowed, divorced, have no children as well as those without any strong attachments to religious, social or community groups. The second type of suicide identified by Durkheim is anomic suicide. Anomic suicide is viewed by Durkheim as disillusionment and disappointment occurring when a person goes through extreme changes in wealth and is ultimately caused from a lack of social regulation. This type of suicide is most notable at times when society is rapidly changing leading to uncertainty. It is a type of suicide that stems from sudden and unexpected changes which Durkheim found mostly occurs during rapid economic changes than in economic crises. Durkheims interestingly points out that suicide is more evident in crisis that brings out disturbances in ones life rather than being attributed to poverty. Durkheim,1951245Altruistic suicide is the third type of suicide that has been identified and according to Durkheim this type of suicide occurs when individuals or a group are too close and intimate ,and stems from being overly integrated into society. It is the other side of the spectrum in social integration when an individual is so well integrated into society that they choose to sacrifice their own life in order to fulfill some obligation. Altruistic suicide, being a complex concept, can further be broken down into three types optional, acute and obligatory altruistic suicide. Optional altruistic suicide is brought about by societal pressures that may in fact be well-intentioned. This can be seen in Japan where there is a high level of suicide amongst students because of stress and high expectations from others and the constant pressu red to excel at school exams. Often the accompanying stress and anxiety pushes them to commit suicide suicide in the victims perspective becomes the answer to license of oppression from what society expects individuals to beAcute altruistic suicide occurs when an individual kills himself in order to save another life. For example when a fire-fighter saves a person from a burning fire but the fire-fighter dies as a result. This is an act of heroism and self-sacrifice. It could be argued that it may by flawed to categories this as a type of suicide which is mainly associated with a troublesome and stressed life when in fact such an act may be a form of pure actObligatory altruistic suicidal refers to a type of suicidal where respect and honor plays an important factor. For example in hind women should kill themselves in the funeral of their husbands after the death of their husbands they are not allowed to live anymore. If such a person insists on living he loses public respect in o ne case the usual funeral honors are denied, in another a life of horror is supposed to await him beyond the grave. Durkheim,1951219Durkheim points out that altruistic suicide is part of the collective spirit Durkheim,1970 for example when the spirit inquires you to do something you are obliged to do so and which we therefore see in environments where society places a solid amount of pressure and expectations on individuals which may in turn push an individual towards suicide as a means of escape. The final type of suicide is fatalistic suicide. Durkheim discussed this type briefly because it was seen as a rare phenomenon in the real world. Fatalistic suicide occurs in social conditions where an individual experiences universal persecution resulting from excessive regulation whose passions were violently choked by oppressive discipline Durkheim,1970 Slavery and persecution are examples of fatalistic suicide in which an individual may feel that they are destined by fate to be in such conditions and choose suicide as the only means to escape such conditionsThese four types of suicide are categorized by the degree of integration and regulation of individuals in their surrounding society. According to Durkheim people commit suicide because of either too high or too low integration or regulation , Suicide is a social fact and is due to social forces. Individuals are more likely to commit suicide each time the condition of society leaves from a state of stability. Society preserves stability by integration and regulationDurkheims work has been critiqued on many grounds for example his emphasis on consensus and morality ,his positivist method and negligence of the individual as an actor , his description of suicide rates . Durkheims concept of suicide is thought to be more reinforced by argument than by fact. However, he is contributed to the growth of sociology and over a difficult theoretical frameworkTo conclude suicide is not an individual act it is a social act. People commit suicide because they are not support by society or they do not feel loved by their own family, if a person has no support in his life and no one to care about him than they can feel valueless and this will lead to depression which may lead to suicide , Suicide rates are correlated with how well a person is integrated into society and the degree to which society regulates individual behavior . in general suicide has some connection with social rules or standards and the individual
